Studies on Haemonchus contortus. II. The effect of abomasal nematodes on subsequent challenge with H. contortus.

چکیده
Fifty-thousand infective larvae of Trichostrongylus axei dosed to 7-9-month-old Merinos protected them against a subsequent challenge with 50 000 infective larvae of Haemonchus contortus. Protection varied with the period between an initial dosage of T. axei and challenge with H. contortus as follows: After 90 days it was more than 80% effective in more than 80% of sheep; at 119 and 180 days there was still a significant reduction in the numbers of H. contortus recovered (P < 0,05 and P < 0,001, respectively). Prior infestation with either Ostertagia circumcincta or with Haemonchus placei was ineffective against challenge with H. contortus.

Immunoprotection in sheep against Haemonchus contortus using its thiol-purified excretory/secretory proteins
Excretory/Secretory antigen was prepared by culturing live adult worms of Haemonchus contortus in RPMI 1640 medium at a concentration of 50 worms per mL in a culture-flask at 37 ˚C for 24 hr and the culture supernatant was used as antigen. The E/S antigen was purified by thiol-sepharose affinity chromatography. On western blot analysis, it was demonstrated that thiol-purified antigen showed a s...
متن کاملImmunization of Arabian sheep with whole gut homogenate of Haemonchus contortus
Ten female lambs of 7-month-old were divided into two equal groups and raised under a helminth-free conditions. Animals in group 1 were immunized two times by whole gut homogenate (WGH) of Haemonchus contortus emulsified in Freund’s adjuvant. In group 2 (control), animals were injected by phosphate buffered saline emulsified in the same adjuvant. Animals were challenged by 10000 third-stage lar...
متن کاملAbomasal nematodes of small ruminants of Ogaden region, eastern Ethiopia : prevalence, worm burden and species composition
A study was carried out to determine the prevalence, species composition and worm burden of abomasal nematodes of small ruminants of Ogaden region slaughtered at Elfora export abattoir. A total of 196 abomasums of animals (114 sheep and 82 goats) were examined according to standard procedures. An overall prevalence rate of 91.2% and 82.9% Haemonchus species was recorded in sheep and goats, resp...
متن کاملImmunization against Lamb Haemonchosis with a Recombinant Somatic Antigen of Haemonchus contortus (rHcp26/23)
Haemonchosis, caused by the abomasal nematode Haemonchus contortus, is a common parasitic disease of sheep. Our previous results showed that a soluble fraction from adult stages of the nematode (p26/23) induced partial protection against challenge. Recombinant DNA technology was applied to obtain a synthetic protein (rHcp26/23). Immunological assays (ELISA, Western blotting, and immunolocalizat...
متن کاملWild deer as potential vectors of anthelmintic-resistant abomasal nematodes between cattle and sheep farms
Gastrointestinal (GI) nematodes are among the most important causes of production loss in farmed ruminants, and anthelmintic resistance is emerging globally. We hypothesized that wild deer could potentially act as reservoirs of anthelmintic-resistant GI nematodes between livestock farms. Adult abomasal nematodes and faecal samples were collected from fallow (n = 24), red (n = 14) and roe deer (...
